Fort Worth Academy firmly believes in the value of a comprehensive education. Physical education and athletics are critically important components of the Fort Worth Academy experience.
Physical education is required. Every student at every grade level participates in physical education every day. The curriculum is sequential and includes skill development, cooperative and competitive activities, wellness, and lifetime fitness. It is a program of equal opportunity for all students.
Athletics include all sports and cheerleading. Participation in athletics is an optional extension of the school day for middle school students.
Though certainly encouraged, participation in athletics is not required. Students who indicate a desire to participate do so with a solid understanding of the following:
-
Participation in all athletic activities is a privilege and is dependent upon maintenance of academic and behavioral standards.
-
The coaching staff will make every effort to accommodate every student who indicates a desire to come out for a sport. Participation in certain sports is limited.
-
Athletics are gender-fair at Fort Worth Academy.
-
Interscholastic competition in grades 5 and 6 is considered a first opportunity for students to exercise their athletic abilities in competition against students from another school. Therefore, all team members will participate. The coaching staff will make every effort to be fair and just in the amount of playing time.
-
Interscholastic competition in grades 7 and 8 is defined as a healthy rivalry between schools where the objective is to defeat the opponent on the court/playing field. Therefore, decisions as to which students play, and for what length of time, will be made by the coach with the aforementioned objective in mind. The coaching staff recognizes the desirability of playing time and will make every effort to provide time for all players. There is, however, no guarantee of equity in playing time and the possibility exists that a player or players might not play at all.
-
The coaching staff recognizes the critical role played by team members from the bench. Encouragement, attention and readiness are expected.
-
Participation in practice is a prerequisite for participation in athletics.
-
Good sportsmanship is a prerequisite for participation in competition as well as for continued team membership. Team members are expected to win without boasting and lose without bitterness. Respect for the coaching staff, for team members, opponents, officials and fans is required at all times and under all circumstances.
-
Athletes are expected to be good stewards of the facility and the equipment at all times - at home and away.
-
Good sportsmanship, encouragement and support are also expected from the Fort Worth Academy coaching staff and Fort Worth Academy fans at all times under all circumstances. Good sportsmanship includes respect for the decisions of the officials, for all team members and for opponents.
