Lauren Parker

List of 1 members.

Mrs. Lauren Parker has a B.S. in Education, and an M.Ed. from Texas Christian
University. She is a certified middle school math, science, and generalist teacher;
here at Fort Worth Academy, Mrs. Parker brings the art of science to our students in
the 7 th and 8 th grades. What inspired her to teach science? “Many individuals and
events”, Mrs. Parker will say, “but certainly a key influence was my science teacher
when I attended Fort Worth Academy as a student.”

In Mrs. Parker’s classroom, science comes alive. She believes strongly that the best
way to learn science is by “doing science instead of memorizing science.” Through
current events, hands-on exploration, and real-world connections, Mrs. Parker’s
students experience science not as a subject to be learned, but an adventure to be
had.  Always looking for new experiences to bring to her students, Mrs. Parker is a
member of the Kosmos STEM Teacher Institute at the Perot Museum and regularly
attends and presents at professional development events on the latest and greatest
that science has to offer.

Those who know her well affectionately call Mrs. Parker a “NASA Nerd.” What does
that mean in more technical terms? It means that Mrs. Parker is one of the select
few who are certified by NASA to access and handle moon rocks… that she’s a
NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador and a Heliophysics Educator Ambassador…
that she’s a graduate of the elite Advanced Space Academy for Educators … and
that she was invited, along with 2 of her students, to present to members of
Congress, NASA Administrators, and science executives at the Sally Ride Science
and GRAIL MoonKam Student Expo in Washington, D.C… As if that weren’t
enough, she “wants to be an astronaut when she grows up,” she says. To that end,
she has several times applied for admission into NASA’s astronaut training program.
“I have the rejection letters to prove it,” she jokes.

So, what’s so important about science? “Science is super important,” she says. “For
one, with all of the information out there, it’s critical that young people develop the
skills to process all of that information and to discern what is true and what is not.”

In her spare time – which she has precious little of when she’s not spending time
with her husband Bradley and their young son, Graham (FWA Kindergartner 2020) -
- she enjoys reading, attending football and baseball games at her alma mater TCU,
and keeping up with her favorite nerdy endeavors.

Prior to returning to the Academy and her dream job, Mrs. Parker taught in the
public school system for 8 years, during which time she received numerous
accolades, including Campus Teacher of the Year, District Teacher of the Year, the
Bayard H. Friedman Hero Award, and the Arlington Masonic Lodge Teacher of
Excellence award.
