Mrs. Karen Bullock graduated cum laude with a B.S. in Elementary Education, and an emphasis in kindergarten, from Texas Wesleyan University where she was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. She also holds a Master’s of Early Childhood Education from the University of North Texas. With 15 years prior kindergarten teaching experience, along with experience teaching child development at the college level and directing a child care center, Mrs. Bullock joined the faculty in 2010. Before she joined the faculty, Mrs. Bullock chose The Academy for her own children, Abbey (The Academy ‘14) and Tommy (The Academy ‘15). In her spare time, she enjoys baking, counted cross stitch, movies both out and at home, collecting children’s books, working on new games and projects for her class, and spending time with friends and family.
Mrs. Karen Bullock comes from a family of teachers and has wanted to be a teacher since she was in the second grade when she decided that she wanted to be just like her teacher. From the time she can remember, all she ever wanted to play was school and, even throughout high school and college, Mrs. Bullock chose to work at a childcare center in order to gain experience in working with children. She loves the young child’s point of view and never tires of experiencing the world through a child’s eyes. She describes kindergarten as the happiest place on earth, says that 5 year old are fabulous and loves that she gets to “be 5 every day”!
Mrs. Bullock looks forward to her students coming in to her classroom each morning eager to find out what they’ll be learning that day.  She enjoys the challenge of discovering each individual child’s interests, abilities, learning styles, and strengths.  She most especially loves early childhood education as she feels that it affords her the best opportunity to be an integral part of laying the firm foundation on which a child’s entire education will be built. Through both her experiences as a teacher and as a mother, she has come to realize even more how very crucial that positive beginning is to a child’s future success and to his or her attitude toward school and to learning and is constantly reminded of the awesome responsibility teachers have to be exemplary role models for their students. She feels that, “because parents don’t have the privilege of doing what I get to do every day,” one of her biggest goals is to make kindergarten not only a magical, special year for her students, but for their parents as well. To that end, she works hard to ensure that parents are as involved as possible.
Mrs. Bullock also loves the way technology is so seamlessly integrated in The Academy curriculum.  “Our reading program, The Super Kids, really comes alive for my students on the SmartBoard”.   She has also been impressed with the smooth integration of the iPads into her classroom. She’s always glad to have one more tool to make learning dynamic for her students.  One of her favorite quotes, however, succinctly conveys her feelings about technology in early childhood education.  “Colin Powell said, ‘All children need a laptop.  Not a computer, but a human lap top.  Moms, dads, grannies, and grandpas, aunts, uncles—someone to hold them, read to them, teach them’ and teachers fall into that category as well’.”  Mrs. Bullock feels that The Academy has struck the perfect balance between integrating technology appropriately without forsaking “the human touch” that is so vital with children.
Mrs. Bullock chose The Academy, first, as a parent because of the caliber of innovative teaching styles, the family atmosphere and support system for each child, as well as the commitment to technological advancements; these were all things that she wanted for her own children. As a teacher, she is amazed at the level of faculty collaboration, the teamwork and camaraderie among not just grade-level or school but between Lower School and Middle School, between faculty and administration and between teachers and parents. Mrs. Bullock saw this as a parent “on the outside looking in”.  She was delighted, but not surprised, to find that as a teacher “the view is the same on the inside looking out”.
Mrs. Bullock maintains that she cannot think of any other profession that is as constantly challenging, as continually fulfilling, and as abundantly rewarding as teaching. She believes that teaching is her calling and where she is meant to be, and there’s no place she’d rather be than at Fort Worth Academy - “It’s Incredible”!!
